KBU International College, Design Camp 2012 entitle "SUPERHEROES"

KBU International College School of Design will be organizing its annual design camp for the 4th consecutive year; Wed-Fri, 14-16 March 2012.

Design Camp is a 3 days-long programme of hands-on workshops where secondary school students will learn to explore, create and make design,while experimenting and challenging their own ideas. They will learn new skills and make new friends too. It is part of the growing movement of 'supplementary schools' that aims to provide 'oshl' - 'out-of-school learning'. In short, KBU design camp is a place that provide students a deep, motivational and authentic experience of what it can really be like to design things and make them.

1 : to furnish (as a computer, airplane, or building) with new or modified parts or equipment not available or considered necessary at the time of manufacture

2 : to install (new or modified parts or equipment) in something previously manufactured or constructed

3 : to adapt to a new purpose or need : MODIFY

Repurposing items and giving them a new lease in life is the core manifesto for Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS). In the recent years there has been an emergence of homegrown designers who are reusing, recycling and retrofitting old items, gadgets and gizmos in the hopes of reducing our dependency on raw materials and the amount of trash that we put out everyday. It is still a fairly new idea in our country, but a good and sound idea that is picking up momentum and  garnering many avid followers and practitioners.

This exhibition is to illustrate to the masses how easy it is to save old items and give it a new role with some modifications. The art installations are the works of students from the BA (Hons) Graphic Design programme of Nottingham Trent University, UK, which is franchised to and conducted at School of Design, KBU International College. These chosen artists are some of the brightest and youngest creative minds in our community. They have chosen various items which are usually seen as junk and refurbishing and retrofitting them together to create a brand new item for good use.

People often throw away things that they have lost interest in or just didn’t know how to fix. Some of these items still have a little bit of life left in them and should not be so easily overlooked. ‘Born Again’ is an exhibition that brings back to life all the neglected, tossed out and worn down items in our space. Students from the BA (Hons) Graphic Design programme of Nottingham Trent University, UK, which is franchised to and conducted at School of Design, KBU International College, showing the world at large that recycling is all the rage. They are shaping up to be the vanguard of revolution to repurpose and reuse old objects in order to save our earth and reduce our dependence on new raw materials. Now the old slightly worn busted up chair in your store room can have a second chance at the spotlight. 

So, let our youth show you how it’s done. Forward, march!

Green Month | Talks, Seminars & Workshops - Week 5 | 25 October - 30 October 2011

Title: Garbage Enzyme

Synopsis of the seminar In this knowledge sharing session, BH will try to turn ‘kitchen waste’ to make the environment a safer place to live. This knowledge sharing session will allow the audience to reduce the amount kitchen waste by converting it into useful “garbage enzyme” at home. By doing so, all of us can help to protect the ozone layer of our planet, as the production of garbage enzyme generates what is called ground-level ozone which helps to maintain the Earth’s temperature by releasing heat trapped by the heavy metal in the clouds. This would have anti-global warming effect if done on a large scale. The session will prompt the audience to reflect on the seriousness of the environmental crisis and how it would affect humanity and the future generations. But more importantly, audience will share a practical way to do something about the problem, creating a sense of hope and sending home the message that each person can make a difference. Mr Chen Fan Hin

Mr Chen who has been working in the last 10 years in the interior design and in various job function and industries, witnesses a lot of evolution or revolution before the green movement. His exposure to China market has, too, gave him insights on what the government could do to adopt green as the national policy. Apart from that, he will also share with the audience how market sees sustainable design as a fashion rather than an attitude. Mr Chen also would like to share with the audience the usage of technology in

Through his current interest and holding in ADP, he aims to bring a whole new design and made furniture solution to the market. Equipped with state-of-the-art design software, online system, production analysis and production system, ADP is able to provide front end design and made furniture and immediately turn those design into production details.
