Sequence '11 : Fashion Show of the various art movements

Art Movement: Surrealism

Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s and was a development from Dada.  The Surrealists embraced the liberation of imagination, and are known for their dream-inspired artworks.

Our model is garbed in a nonsensical and mysterious headgear which combines illogical elements inspired by imagination and dreams.

Art Movement: Dada

Dadaism was a cultural movement that began in Switzerland during World War I and peaked from 1916 to 1922. Its purpose was to ridicule what its participants considered to be the meaninglessness of the modern world.
Here we have translated Marcel Duchamp’s urinal ‘Fountain’ into a headgear in the shape of a toilet bowl, to pay tribute, and to embrace Marcel Duchamp’s famous work.

From right: Art Movement International Style

The International style was a major architectural style that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s. The characteristics of the International Style include a radical simplification of form, a rejection of ornament, and adoption of glass, steel and concrete as preferred materials.

The glass material is applied literally on to the shoulder section of the model, the simplification of the skirt that has large portion of white color and a little bit of black lining brings out the simplicity.

From the left:
Art Movement: Roman Architecture
Architecture of the Roman Empire concerned themselves with the expression of strength, power and domination.  The Romans developed wonderful new structures such as the arch and dome to enhance their architectural magnificence.
The helmet that the model is wearing is inspired by the arch structure while the top expresses the strength and dominance of the empire.   The skirt which is made by yarn expresses the types of columns found in that period.

Art movement: Gothic

Gothic architecture is the architecture of the period between the early 12th and early 16th centuries. The characteristic of Gothic architecture include the pointed arch, the ribbed vault and the flying buttress. The height and volume of the heaven-reaching cathedrals symbolize the perfect unison of architecture and spirituality.

The top that the model is wearing is inspired by the ribbed vaults of Gothic architecture while the wire structure that come out from the top is inspired by the flying buttresses. The entire outfit, along with the flowing train, expresses the height and grandeur of Gothic architecture.

From the right:
Art movement: Bauhaus

Bauhaus first open its doors to students in the year 1919. Their philosophy was; that an object’s form should ideally follow its function.  This remains as one of the most powerful ideas in design.

The Bauhaus mask is an adaptation of one of the movement's logos, created in 1921 by Oscar Schlemmer. In keeping with Bauhaus ideals, it was designed using basic lines and curves with as few unnecessary elements and affectations as possible.

Art Movement: Synthetic Cubism

Synthetic Cubism was the second main movement within Cubism that was developed by Picasso, Braque, Juan Gris and others between 1912 and 1919.  It was the introduction collage materials as a medium for fine art work.

We celebrate Picasso’s pioneering work and ideas in collage; and the deconstruction of an object by creating an outfit that is constructed with a collage of different parts of the faces of our course mates.

Art Movement: Abstract Expressionism

Abstract expressionism was an American post–World War II art movement that is characterized by its image of being rebellious, anarchic, highly idiosyncratic and, some feel, nihilistic.

The model’s outfit is a modern interpretation of Jackson Pollock’s paint splattered artworks by incorporating modern elements like dynamic triangles and bright neon colored paint.
Art Movement: Contemporary
Contemporary architecture is generally speaking the architecture of the present time. Not bound by rules or dogmatic styles, contemporary architecture is the extension of the architect as an artist. The forms are often expressive and sculptural, symbolizing and reflecting the culture and society of the times.
This outfit is inspired by the Esplanade-Theatres on the bay, Singapore which has a durian like spiky exterior look; is a simple repetition of shapes yet expressive and detail in terms of architectural form.

Graduation Showcase: Sequence '11 - Discover the Posibilities

An introduction to Sequence '11

Sequence'11 is a Graduation Showcase of final year students' work for the BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design and BA (Hons) Graphic Design programmes of Nottingham Trent University, UK, franchised to and conducted at the School of Design , KBU International College.

This year Sequence will take you on an exploration of the concept geometry. Geometry is universal, structured and modular. Using only the basic shapes, we are able to create almost infinite permutation of patterns, designs and structures. This means that there are endless innovative and posibilities in our design, as long as we endeavor to keep discovering them.

We see geometry not only as a design thinking tool, but also as a reflection of our journey as students. Just any 3-dimensional object can be developed from a 2-dimensional shape, we began our design education by  learnung the fundamentals of art and design. We were introduce to critical and creative thinking, and were later encouraged to build upon these skills through a variety of projects and essays. Since then, we have grown into graduates that we are today, equipped with the skills and knowledge that gives us the confidence as design profesionals, who are ready for the working world.
