Foundation In Art & Design | Orientation Project (July 2011) -Topiary Garden Project

Theme - Art & Ecology
Title - Topiary Garden Project

The orientation project is initiated in conjunction with the upcoming “Green Month” to be organized by School of Design which will involve more environmental and ecological related design activities.

Topiary is defined as the art of creating sculptures in the medium of common plants where the trimmed branches yield dense leaves that cover the topiary frame to achieve a recognizable form. Modern topiaries are built of available materials and can be completed in a few hours.

The topiary design could be in a form of three-dimensional rendition of Text / Typographical messages concerning the environment. It could also resemble 3D objects which are significance with green technology. It could start with artificial plants and to be further developed with actual plants.

After the construction of the alphabets, students will place the mesh wire on the alphabets.


Before closing the alphabets or object, students stuffs newspapers to stabilize and to give solid form to the alphabet structure.


Placement of the artificial grass on the mesh wire with PVA glue.
